The beach, at Aspy Bay
on the East coast of the Cape Breton Highlands

Aspy Bay is backed by a 10-km long beautiful sandy beach. Sheltered behind the beach, two large salt ponds are warm enough to farm mussels and oysters. . ![]() |
Halfway down the bay, Dingwall Harbor is well sheltered by sand dunes and a breakwater. On this nice July 2002 day, it is also under a blockade by crab fishermen protesting for fairer catch quota allocations. ![]() |
|
A mile farther down Aspy Bay (near Smelt Brook), the beach has become rocky and provides a well-deserved lunch site. ![]() |
The Southern tip of Aspy Bay consists of a sharp rocky point and a small island : White Point. We found this small beach between sea and cliff, sheltered from the wind, where we pitched our tent for the night. ![]() |

From White Point to Ingonish, the rocky coast is very exposed, with few safe landing spots when waves are strong. Cosy Neil's Harbour, hidden in a small bay, behind a substantial breakwater is a welcome sight. Our kayaks are pulled on the rocks, just like the local fishing boats. ![]() |
|
Neil's Harbour lighthouse has no need for a lighthouse keeper anymore. During the Summer months, it houses a popular ice-cream stand and provides jobs for a few students. ![]() |
On the Northern side of Ingonish Island, a deserted beach bears unusually large bird tracks... Their size and the clear talon mark puzzle us just as a large shadow swoops above : the secluded island's tall trees are home to a large bald eagle colony. ![]() |
|
At the North end of Ingonish Bay, away from the busy Cabot trail, Ingonish Island grants us this trip's last night of solitude, facing the Atlantic Ocean, under the watchful gaze of bald eagles. ![]() |
Late the next day, we camp at the beautiful Broad Cove Park campground... Our "clothes line" puzzles neighboring campers! ![]() |
