Red Island to Fox Island

Red Island to Fox Island

Départure point :

Red Island (East side).

Route and camp:

A number of small islands and rocks dot the area East of Red Island. The coast is generally rocky with a few small beached.

White Bear Bay fjord is about 8 km away. Woody Island is the small island just off Northwest Head which marks the entrance to White Bear Bay. The sheltered side of Woody Island as well as the Northwest shore of Bear Island offers several sheltered landing sites.

Past Bear Island, beyond the cliffs of Bear Head , the coast line leads to Fox Island.

The small sheltered harbour is easily found in the narrow passage behind Fox Island. Two cabins still stand in what used to be a fishing community. The community was resettled to Ramea and Burgeo. We camped close to the outer cabin, on a grassy flat that may have been a vegetable garden at one point. A stream flows down from high on the island and a cistern catches this water just above the cabins.

A few tombstones dot the rocky outcrop that curves around the harbour. We were told that another, larger cemetery can be found by hiking up along the stream.

Red Island to Fox Island traveling time is 4 to 5 hours plus stops.
