Gulch Cove to Cape La Hune and Wild Cove

Fox Island to Gulch Cove

Departure point :

Gulch Cove

Route and camp:

After a break at Gulch Cove, the coast line is uninterrupted cliffs all the way to La Hune Harbour, with no shelter. Caves and narrow cuts go deep into the granite rock and invite further exploration (on a quiet day). Arriving at La Hune Harbour, clear signs of glacial erosion appear as the coastal rocks become more rounded. Just beyond, La Hune Bay was cut but those glaciers into a deep fjord.

La Hune Harbour is the site of another abandoned outport. Two cabins are still standing against a rocky outcrop. The tall grass covering the narrow isthmus joining the rocky hills of Long Point and West Point to the coast hide the ruins of a half dozen more cabins and a few tombstones.

This protected site is accessible from the West or from La Hune Bay. A clear stream runs down the smooth rocks at the bottom of La Hune Bay but requires a bit of a scramble up the rocks to fill up.

The entrance to La Hune Bay offers several sheltered beaches. Continuing farther East and rounding Cape La Hune, brings you along dramatic rock formations to the sandy beach of Wild Cove. This is the first sandy beach that we saw since Burgeo. This site offers no shelter from East winds and waves but was perfect on the day we were there. The South side of the cove is lined by rock pinnacles offering a dramatic contrast with the more rounded rocks of the coast.

The beach itself is very flat with little protection against waves and tides. A sand berm just above the beach is narrow and covered with fragile sand grass. Fresh water is available in the form of a clear stream running down the rocks at the North end of the beach.

It's a 2 1/2 hours paddle from Gulch Cove to La Hune Harbour and a little bit under another hour until Wild Cove, plus stops.
